Most of us know about fictional cryptids like the Siren-head and even though they are scary, there is some comfort in knowing that such creatures are fictional but what if we tell you there are nightmare-inducing creatures that exist on earth. Here is our list of top 10 most terrifying creatures on earth.

1. Fangtooth

This bony fish with sharp fangs seems like something straight out of nightmares. Fangtooth is an aggressive hunter and has teeth so big that it can’t even close its mouth. They live in the deep sea and are among the deepest living fish.

2. Atolla jellyfish

Equally fascinating and terrifying in appearance, the Atolla jellyfish is a species of deep-sea crown jellyfish. When attacked it produces an array of blue light flashes because of which it is also called the “alarm jelly”.

3. Goblin shark

Goblin shark, sometimes called a “living fossil” is a rare deep-sea shark. They can thrust their jaws up to their snout to catch prey.

4. Bigfin Squid

With large fins and long arms, Bigfin squid looks like an alien. They are a group of rarely seen cephalopods. They are found in the deep ocean and can measure up to 7 meters in length.

5. Star-nosed mole

Star-nosed mole is one of the most bizarre looking animal. They have the ability to smell underwater. Its nose has 22 pink, finger like appendages formed in a star-like structure. This star shaped organ is remarkably sensitive to touch and each tentacle is covered by more than 25,000 minute sensory receptors.

6. Stargazer fish

Stargazer fish with eyes on top, upward-facing mouth, a large head with venomous spines sure is a great addition to our nightmares. They are found in shallow and deep saltwater in both the Mediterranean as well as in the Atlantic Ocean.

7.Philippine Tarsier

The Philippine Tarsier are a perfect mixture of cute and creepy. Also known locally as mawumag, they are one of the smallest primates. It is found in the southeastern part of the archipelago.

8. Frilled shark

The frilled shark looks like something straight out of the legends of sea creatures with its unique and equally terrifying mouth and appearance. It is found near the sea floor throughout the Atlantic and Pacific Oceans.

9. Tube-nosed bat

The tube-nosed bat will sure give many people the heebie-jeebies with their strange appearance and bright red eyes. They have raised tubular nostrils hence the name. Tube-nosed bat lives in the north-eastern Australia.

10. Promachoteuthis sulcus

Though normal in appearance, this deep sea squid gets its eeriness from the soft folds of tissue around its mouth that resembles human teeth.
