Life out in the wild is tough especially for those who are at the bottom of the food chain. Many such species have developed great defenses against predators. We have collected some such incredible defense mechanisms and made a list for you.
1. Bombardier Beetles
Bombardier Beetles gets their name from their unique defense mechanism. When disturbed, they spray a hot noxious chemical from their behind with a popping sound.
2. Atlas moth
The Atlas moth are also know as “snake’s head” because the tip of their wings resemble the head of a snake. This resemblance helps protect the moth from potential predators.
3. Formica rufa
Formica rufa also known as the red wood ant are known for their ability to spray formic acid from their abdomens as a defense.
4. Hairy frog
The hairy frog got its name for the hair-like structures on the body and thighs. It is also known as Wolverine frog because it intentionally breaks the bones of the toe and stick them out to produce “claws” as a defense mechanism.
5. Pebble toad
Sometimes the best thing is to run when confronted by a predator and that’s exactly what the pebble toads does. When threatened, the toad folds its limbs under its body, tucks its head in and rolls down the slope as a ball.
6. Electric eel
The electric eel is an electric fish which can produce electrical charge of up to 600 volts to catch prey and to keep the predators away.
7. Horned lizard
Along with the camouflage, Horn lizard have a bizarre self defense mechanism. The are able to rupture tiny vessels around their eyelids and squirt a stream of blood from the corners of the eyes that can reach a distance up to 5 ft.
8. Iberian Ribbed Newt
Iberian Ribbed Newt is known for its sharp ribs that it forces through its skin when confronted by a predator . The ribs that are coated with poison act as a great defense mechanism as it injects poison in the predator.
That’s our list of the most incredible defense mechanism used by living organisms. We all keep evolving to ensure our survival so let’s wait and see what new mechanisms are going to develop as time passes by.
