Every actor tries their best to ace a role but some actors take this dedication to an extreme level and completely transforms themselves. Here is a list of some such dedicated actors who poured their blood,sweat and tears into their roles.
1. Lily Collins
Losing weight is a hard process both emotionally and physically but it can be a lot tougher if you have a history of dealing with eating disorder as was the case with Lily Collins. The actress lost around 20lbs to prepare for the role of Ellen a 20-year-old anorexic girl in the movie ‘To the bones’.
2. Jared Leto
Many actors feel the need to live out their onscreen character in order to give justice to their role. Jared Leto took it to another level, he used method acting approach and never broke out of his character for the movie ‘The suicide squad’. He went as far as visiting an asylum, spending time in a jail cell and giving the cast a dead pig.
3. Chris Hemsworth
It’s not a easy task to play a superhero especially if the superhero is the god of thunder ‘Thor’. Chris Hemsworth gave his all for the role and followed a strict diet and exercise routine to achieve the chiseled body. After the events of ‘Avengers:Infinity war’, Thor has become depressed and gained weight so for ‘Avengers:Endgame’ Chris had to wear a bodysuit as some scenes required him to go back and forth with his look and the bodysuit weighed around 60 to 70 pounds while filming the movie.
4. Jake Gyllenhaal
In order to play the character of Lou Bloom from the movies ‘Nightcrawler’, Jake Gyllenhaal dropped 30 pounds by eating as few calories as possible and would run 15 miles from his house to the set.
5. Margot Robbie
Playing the role of a real person is never easy, everything needs to be matched perfectly and that includes learning their talents too. Though stunt doubles and CGI helps, some actors take it upon themselves to perfect the role, Margot Robbie is one such actress. For the movie ‘I, Tonya’, Margot Robbie spent five months to learn ice skating to play the role of Tonya Harding, a talented figure skater and the first American woman to complete a triple axel during a competition.
6. Rooney Mara
Rooney Mara changed her whole image for the role of Lisbeth Salander, a computer hacker in the movie ‘The girl with the dragon tattoo’. From spiky hair style to piercings, a pale complexion and a skinny frame, Mara went through all the transformation to give justice to her role.
7. Natalie Portman
Natalie Portman lost 20 lb following a strict diet of carrots and almonds while rehearsing 8 hours a day for the movie ‘Black Swan’ in which she plays the role of Nina Sayers, a 28-year-old ballerina. She even dislocated a rib during her rehearsals.
8. Hilary Swank
Hilary Swank went through extreme training which included 1.5-2 hours of weight lifting and 2.5 hours of boxing, six days a week for 90 days in order to prepare for the role of an aspiring boxer Maggie, in the movie ‘Million dollar baby’. Hilary even had to consume 210 grams of protein everyday to gain 19 pounds of muscle.
9. Tom Hanks
The movie Castaway follows the survival journey of Chuck Noland (played by Tom Hanks), a FedEx troubleshooter who is stranded on an uninhabited island after his plane crashes. To play the role Hanks had to gain weight to look like a middle-aged man for some scenes and then lose 55 pounds for the island scenes in about four months.
10. Tom Hardy
Tom hardy transformed his entire body for the movie Bronson in which he plays the role of Michael Gordon Peterson, aka Charles Bronson – Britain’s most violent criminal. Tom had to put on lot of weight in a short amount of period and gained around 40lb. Hardy spend time visiting jail and had phone conversations with Charles Bronson to prepare for his role.
